#LA51 "Volcano Sumaco, Ecuador, S. A. "
|
| Sumaco Volcano is located over 100 km SE of Quito. It is an isolated cone about 50 km east of the main eastern range of the Andes. The volcano is visible from a large surrounding area.
Sumaco has a symmetrical composite morphology, and there are reports of three explosive erruptions, the most resent in 1933. The dates of the past eruptions are 1933, 1895, 1650. I took the photograph from which the painting was done when we stepped out of our tour bus to do some birding. It was a beautiful panarama as the rainy season was just beginning and the sky was gray with little puffs of white clouds passing by with the frequent showers. A swallow-tailed kite sailed over in the upper right hand corner and a many-banded aracaris is perched in the dead tree to the right at the bottom. The llama is used as a pack animal in South America and is the subject matter in this painting being led by its owner with baskets on it's back. |
